Dallas Cowboy’s Hall Of Famer Emmitt Smith is an avid cyclist, and is turning his hobby and passion into an event that may quickly become the premier cycling gathering in North Texas.
The first annual Emmitt Smith Gran Fondo is scheduled for Frisco on Saturday, September 17, 2016, at RoughRider’s Ballpark. It will feature a $10,000 winner-take-all purse for the top finisher in the Century ride.
While the 100-mile Century will draw the strongest competitors, there are shorter routes for other riders of all levels.
There is a Metric Century (63 miles/100 km), a 45-mile route and a 22-mile route. There is even a 2.2-mile Family Fun ride. All routes will be from a staggered start at RoughRider’s Ballpark.
Entry fees range from $22 to $95, depending on the distance of the ride you select. All proceeds go to the Pat and Emmitt Smith Charities foundation.
In addition to the cycling there will be a festival with entertainment and a beer garden at the ballpark. Check the ride’s website for more details.
Organizers say they expect at least 2,500 cyclists for the inaugural event, which would make it one of the largest rides in North Texas.
Emmitt retired after the 2005 NFL season and is still the all-time leading rusher in NFL history. He is a graduate of the University of Florida, and a former All American while playing for the Gators.
