McKinney’s Apex Center Open For Business

Apex Center SlidesMcKinney’s Apex Center, much anticipated for recreation and swimming, is now open. Located at Alma and El Dorado, the $36-million center has the latest cardio exercise machines, over 70 of them, and a state-of-the-art weight room.

There are two pools inside, one for competition, one for leisure and play swimming. When I was there opening weekend, the competition pool was being used for a synchronized swimming class.

The outdoor pools and slides are still under construction and targeted for opening Memorial Day weekend.

The membership rates are a little on the steep side, the highest for a municipal complex in the area, but there are discounts for seniors and kids 17 and under. The facility is not supported by the city’s general fund budget, so the pricing structure is different than tax-supported facilities found in other area communities. See the membership rates on the Apex Center website.

The center’s director, Teresa Thomason, talked about the excitement leading up to the opening. “The McKinney residents have waited a long time for this facility, and I truly enjoyed watching their dreams become a reality.  We have an amazing team here and we are excited to service our community!”

For those interested in group exercise programs, there are classes for yoga and pilates, zumba, water aerobics, cycling, and many more. Most group classes are included in the membership fee. Personal trainers are available for individual instruction for an additional fee.

There are community rooms for local groups, and rooms for things like birthday parties and family reunions. They can be reserved at the front desk.

The center is set up on three levels. The lower level is for the pools and party rooms. Most of the second level is set up for cardio machines and weights. The third level also has some machines, and features an indoor track for walkers or runners. There is also a large gymnasium for basketball.

There is a supervised child care center for kids up to 9 years old.
